About ball and roller bearings

What do the suffixes after a bearing number mean?

They describe the variant. A Z or ZZ indicates a metal shield on one or both sides, 2RS a rubber seal, and C3 a larger than standard internal clearance for applications that run hot. The base number gives the size, the suffix the specification.

How do I identify the bearing I need?

By the number on the existing one. If it is unreadable, the bore, outside diameter, and width will identify it. Bring the old bearing or the numbers and we can match it.

When do I need a self-aligning bearing?

Where the shaft may not be perfectly in line with the housing, on a long shaft, or where the frame flexes. An ordinary bearing binds and fails early under misalignment; a self-aligning one accommodates it.

What is the difference between a shield and a seal?

A shield is metal and does not touch the inner ring, so it runs with less friction but keeps out less contamination. A seal contacts the ring, sealing better but adding friction and limiting speed.
