Plywood
Plywood is made from thin layers of wood glued with the grain of each layer running across the one below, which is what gives it strength in both directions and keeps it from splitting. It is sold in standard 4 x 8 foot sheets, specified by nominal thickness.

About plywood
What is the difference between ordinary and marine plywood?
The adhesive. Marine plywood uses a water-resistant glue, so it holds together in damp conditions and through repeated wetting, which is why it is used for formwork and anywhere moisture is likely. Ordinary plywood is for dry interior work.
Why is the actual thickness different from the size on the label?
Plywood is sold by nominal size, which is a naming convention rather than a measurement. A sheet sold as 1/4 inch may actually measure around 3.7mm. If a thickness is critical to your work, ask for the actual figure rather than relying on the nominal size.
What is phenolic board used for?
Phenolic-faced panels are made for concrete formwork. The hard resin face resists moisture and releases cleanly from set concrete, so the panel can be reused many more times than ordinary plywood.
