Bolted Steel Connections
Steel beams and columns connect via bolted joints. Bolts must be grade-rated (ASTM A325 for main connections, A307 for minor). We supply the sizes and grades your connection design calls for.
Shear vs Tension Connections
Bolts in shear (two plates sliding past each other) can use lower-grade bolts than tension (pulling apart). Design engineer specifies; we supply the correct grade.
Wood Framing (Lag Bolts, Lag Screws)
Heavy timber connections use lag screws rated for withdrawal load. Size depends on timber species and screw diameter.

Bolts
Hex bolts (coarse thread)
1/4in to 1-1/4in and M6 to M24, black, hot-dip galvanized, or stainless 304/316, grades A307, Grade 5, 8.8 and 10.9.
Structural high-tensile hex bolts
1/2in to 1-1/4in, ASTM A325 and A490, with heavy hex nuts and hardened washers, stocked and to order.
Carriage bolts
Round head with square neck, 1/4in to 3/4in, 1in to 8in long, for timber and formwork.
Machine bolts and stud bolts
3/8in to 1in, all-thread rod in 1m or 3m lengths, cut to size with matching nuts.
U-bolts and J-bolts
For pipe (1/2in to 4in OD) and foundation ties, 1/4in to 5/8in rod, galvanized.
Anchors
Wedge (expansion) anchors
1/4in to 3/4in, 2in to 8in embedment, zinc or hot-dip galvanized, for concrete.
Drop-in and sleeve anchors
Drop-in M6 to M20, sleeve anchors 3/8in to 3/4in for brick and hollow block.
Chemical (epoxy) anchors
Threaded rod M8 to M24 set with injection resin, for rebar dowelling and base plates.
Cast-in anchor bolts (J and L type)
Anchor bolts with nuts, 1/2 x 6 up to 3/4 x 12, plus larger sizes to order, for column base plates and machine mounts.
Nuts and Washers
Hex and heavy hex nuts
1/4in to 1-1/4in and M6 to M24, grade matched to bolt, black, galvanized, or stainless.
Lock nuts
Nylon-insert (nyloc) and all-metal types, plus jam nuts, for vibration resistance.
Flat, spring, and fender washers
1/4in to 1in, split-ring lock washers, hardened structural washers.
Screws, Nails, and Rivets
Self-drilling tek screws
Hex-head and pan-head, #8 to #14, 1/2in to 3in, zinc or ruspert-coated, for roofing and steel studs.
Drywall and gypsum screws
Fine-thread for wood, coarse or self-drill for metal studs, 6 x 1in to 8 x 3in.
Wood screws and lag screws
Wood screws #6 to #14, lag screws 1/4in to 1/2in x 1-1/2in to 6in.
Common wire (CW) nails
1in, 1-1/4in, 1-1/2in, 2in, 2-1/2in, 3in, 4in, 5in, 6in, sold per box.
Concrete nails
Hardened concrete nails, 1in to 4in, sold per box.
Finishing and umbrella nails
Lost-head finishing nails 1in to 6in, umbrella-head roofing nails (plain or twisted), and hardiflex nails.
Blind rivets (pop rivets)
Aluminium and stainless, 3.2mm to 4.8mm, grip ranges to suit sheet thickness.
Common questions about fasteners & hardware
What is the difference between ASTM A325 and A307 bolts?
A325 is high-strength (tensile 1,000+ MPa), used for critical connections. A307 is general-purpose (tensile 400 MPa), used for minor connections and braced framing. Engineer specifies; if unsure, assume A325.
Can I reuse bolts after disassembly?
Bolts in shear can be reused once. Bolts in tension should not be reused (they may be plastically deformed, weakening the joint). Replace tension bolts.
What size nails for wooden framing?
For 2x2 and 2x3 coco lumber framing and formwork, 2-1/2in to 3in common wire nails are the everyday pick; 4in for 2x4 and heavier joints. Boards and trim take 1-1/2in to 2in finishing nails. Nails are sold per kilo or per box; send your lumber list and we will match sizes.
