Angle bar is steel rolled into a right angle along its length. The shape gives it stiffness in two directions at once, which is why it is used for frames, brackets, bracing, and supports where a flat bar would bend.

About angle bar
How is angle bar sized?
By the length of its two legs, given in inches, and its thickness, given in millimetres. A 2 x 2 angle has two 50mm legs, and the thickness of the steel is quoted separately. Two angles with the same leg size but different thicknesses behave very differently under load.
Which thickness should I use?
That depends on the load and the span, which is a design question rather than a supply one. As a rough guide, thinner sections suit brackets and light frames, while thicker sections are for structural work carrying real load. If a drawing specifies a thickness, use it.
What is the difference between angle bar and flat bar?
Angle bar is bent to a right angle along its length, which makes it stiff in two directions. Flat bar is a plain rectangular strip. The angle resists bending far better for the same weight of steel, which is why it is used for framing rather than flat bar.
