Questions

About hinges and door hardware

How do I choose a hinge size?

By the weight and width of the leaf it carries. A heavy gate needs larger hinges, and more of them, than an internal door. Undersized hinges sag and eventually tear out of the frame.

Should exterior hardware be galvanized or stainless?

Outdoors, yes. Plain steel hardware rusts quickly in a humid climate, and a seized hinge or padlock is a nuisance to replace once it is installed.

Do you stock hardware not listed here?
