These are the fittings that connect a rigging assembly together: what joins rope to chain, chain to hook, and an eye to whatever it is anchored to. Each has a rated size, and the assembly is only as strong as its weakest fitting.

About shackles and fittings
What is the difference between a chain shackle and an anchor shackle?
The shape of the bow. A chain shackle, sometimes called a D shackle, has a narrow body and is meant for straight in-line loading. An anchor shackle, or bow shackle, has a wider rounded bow that accepts loads from more than one direction. Use the anchor type where the load may pull at an angle.
Why does a rope eye need a thimble?
Without one, the rope bends tightly around whatever it is attached to and the inner wires are crushed and worn every time the load moves. A thimble holds the eye in a smooth curve and takes that wear itself, which markedly extends the life of the rope.
How many wire rope clips do I need, and which way round?
The number depends on rope diameter, and the manufacturer's instructions govern it. The rule that matters most is that the saddle of the clip goes on the loaded part of the rope and the U-bolt on the tail, often remembered as never saddle a dead horse. Fitting them the wrong way round badly reduces the holding power of the eye.
Can these fittings be used for lifting people?
General rigging hardware is not suitable for lifting people. That requires equipment specifically rated and certified for the purpose, with a much larger design factor. If your application involves lifting people, tell us and we will point you at what the standard requires.
