Cargo Blocks and Chain
Three items that come up in marine, cargo handling, and machinery work. Cargo blocks are heavy-duty sheaves for load handling. Kenter shackles join two lengths of anchor chain without a conventional shackle pin. Roller chain is the drive chain used in machinery.

About cargo blocks and chain
What is a Kenter shackle and why not use an ordinary one?
It is a joining link that assembles to the same profile as the chain itself, with no protruding pin or bow. That matters because anchor chain has to run over a windlass gypsy, and a standard shackle would jam. A Kenter passes through smoothly.
What do 10A-1 and 12A-1 mean on roller chain?
They are standard chain designations. The number gives the pitch, the distance between the pins, and the suffix indicates a single strand. Chain has to match the sprockets it runs on, so the designation is what you order by, not a measurement of the old chain by eye.
How is a cargo block rated?
By working capacity in tons and by sheave size. The sheave diameter matters as much as the rating, because a rope bent around too small a sheave wears out quickly regardless of what the block is rated to carry.
