About flat bar
What is the difference between flat bar and plate?
Size and how they are used. Flat bar comes in narrow strip widths and is used as a linear member. Plate comes in large sheets and is cut to shape. For a long narrow piece, flat bar wastes far less material than cutting it from plate.
How is flat bar specified?
By thickness and width, both usually in inches or millimetres. Both figures matter: two bars of the same width but different thickness behave very differently under load.
Which size do I need?
That depends on the load and the span, which is a design question. If a drawing specifies a size, follow it. If you are fabricating something non-structural, tell us what it is for and we will suggest what is commonly used.
