Questions

About bolts, nuts, and screws

When do I need an expansion anchor rather than a screw?

When fixing into concrete or masonry. An expansion anchor grips by wedging inside the hole as it is tightened, which a screw cannot do in masonry. The load and the base material decide which type of anchor is appropriate.

Why use a washer?

It spreads the clamping load over a wider area, which stops the bolt head pulling into a soft material, and it protects the surface as the nut turns. A spring washer additionally resists the joint loosening under vibration.

What is a blind rivet for?

Joining sheet where you can only reach one side. The rivet is set from the accessible face and forms its head on the far side, which is why it is standard in ductwork, cladding, and enclosures.
