Where it's used
Structural Steel Connections
Welded connections in buildings and industrial structures must use electrodes matched to the base steel grade. Structural engineer specifies electrode type (E70 for Grade 250 steel, E80 for higher grades). We stock the standard AWS classes.
Field vs Shop Welding
Shop-welded connections use GMAW (MIG) wire for fast, consistent output. Field welds (on-site) often use stick electrodes (more portable, wind-tolerant). Specify your location and we will recommend the right process.
Corrosion-Resistant Welding (Coastal, Wet Environments)
Stainless steel welding requires stainless electrode (AWS E308L, E309L) and different shielding gas (argon, not CO2). Coastal buildings and marine structures need stainless welding.

Stick (SMAW) Electrodes
General-purpose electrode
AWS E6012, 3/32in (2.5mm), 1/8in (3.2mm), 5/32in (4.0mm), sold per box.
Deep-penetration electrode
AWS E6011, 3/32in, 1/8in, 5/32in, good for dirty or galvanized stock and root passes.
Low-hydrogen structural electrode
AWS E7018, 3/32in, 1/8in, 5/32in, for high-strength and structural welds.
Stainless steel electrode
AWS E308L-16, 2.0mm to 3.2mm, low-carbon for 304 stainless.

Solid MIG wire, mild steel
AWS ER70S-6, 0.8mm to 1.2mm, on 1kg, 5kg, and 15kg spools.
Self-shielded flux-core wire
AWS E71T-GS, 0.8mm and 0.9mm, gasless, for portable and outdoor work.
Stainless MIG wire
AWS ER308L, 0.8mm to 1.0mm, for 304-grade stainless.
Shielding gas
CO2 or argon-CO2 mix for MIG, pure argon for TIG, plus oxy-acetylene sets for cutting and brazing.
Cutting, Grinding, and Abrasives
Metal cutting disc
4in (105mm) and 7in (180mm), about 1.0mm to 1.6mm thick, 16mm arbor.
Grinding disc
4in and 7in, about 6mm thick, for deburring and weld cleanup.
Flap disc and wire wheel
4in and 4.5in flap discs in 40 to 120 grit, cup and wheel brushes for rust removal.
Sandpaper and steel wool
Sheet sandpaper in grit 150, 240, and 320, per sheet or per box, plus steel wool by the roll.

Common questions about welding & metalwork supplies
What is the difference between E70XX and E80XX electrodes?
E70XX produces 70 ksi (480 MPa) tensile strength, suitable for Grade 250 steel. E80XX produces 80 ksi (550 MPa), for higher-grade steels (Grade 345+). Match the electrode to the base steel grade.
Can I use stick welding in the rain?
No. Moisture interferes with the arc and electrode coating. You need a dry tent or enclosure. FCAW (flux-core arc welding) is more weather-tolerant than SMAW.
How do I know if a weld passes inspection?
Visual pass: no cracks, consistent bead, no undercut. Structural welds get radiographic or ultrasonic testing per engineer specs.
