V-Belts and Pulleys

The parts that transmit power from a motor to a machine. A belt drive is simple, absorbs shock, and slips rather than breaking something when a machine jams, which is why it remains standard on plant and equipment.

Questions

About v-belts and pulleys

How do I identify a V-belt?

By the section, which is the belt profile, and the length. The code is normally printed on the belt itself. If it is worn off, bring the old belt in and we can match it.

Why does the belt section matter?

The belt has to seat correctly in the pulley groove. A belt of the wrong section rides too high or too low, so it slips, wears quickly, and can damage the pulley.

Should I replace belts in sets?

On a multi-belt drive, yes. Mixing a new belt with worn ones means the new belt carries most of the load and fails early.
