Sling Belts and Strapping
Webbing slings are flat synthetic belts used to lift loads that would be marked or damaged by chain or wire rope. They are colour-coded by capacity to an international convention, so the colour tells you the rating at a glance. Steel strapping is a separate product, used to bind and secure loads for transport.

Questions
About sling belts and strapping
What do the colours on a sling belt mean?
They indicate capacity, following an international convention, so a rigger can identify the rating of a sling by sight. The colour is a quick check rather than a substitute for reading the label, which carries the actual working load limit.
Why is the choked rating lower than the straight rating?
In a choke hitch the sling passes through itself and pinches at the choke point, which concentrates stress there. The rated capacity is reduced to allow for it. Every configuration of a sling has its own rating, and the label lists them.
When should a webbing sling be taken out of service?
Cuts, abrasion, heat or chemical damage, an unreadable label, and any damage to the eyes or stitching all mean the sling is finished. Synthetic webbing also degrades with prolonged sunlight exposure, so slings stored outdoors need closer inspection.
