Abrasives and Consumables

The consumables a job gets through rather than the materials it is built from. They are ordered by the box or the roll alongside everything else, and running out of them stops work as surely as running out of cement.

Questions

About abrasives and consumables

What does the grit number on sandpaper mean?

It is how coarse the abrasive is, and the scale runs so that a lower number is coarser. Grit 150 removes material quickly and leaves visible scratches; 320 is much finer and is used to smooth a surface before finishing. Work from coarse to fine rather than jumping straight to a fine grit.

What is skim coat used for?

It is a thin cementitious layer applied over a wall to even out the surface before painting. It fills minor imperfections and gives a smooth finish that paint sits on properly, which matters far more on the final look than the paint itself does.

Do you stock consumables not listed here?

The catalogue runs deeper than any page can list, and we source items on request through supplier relationships built up over decades. Send us the item and we will tell you straight whether we have it or can get it.
