About adhesives and sealants
Which sealant should I use?
It depends on the materials either side of the joint, how much the joint will move, and whether it is wet or exposed to sunlight. A sealant that works on one substrate may not adhere to another at all, so tell us what you are sealing.
What is backer rod for?
It fills the depth of a joint so the sealant forms the right shape and only bonds to the two faces, not the back. Without it a sealant bonds on three sides and tears as the joint moves.
Can I use the wrong thinner with a paint?
No. Each type of paint needs its matching thinner. Using the wrong one can stop the paint curing properly, ruin the finish, or leave a coating that never fully hardens.
