About gypsum and panel boards
Where should gypsum board not be used?
Anywhere continually damp. Ordinary gypsum board softens and degrades with moisture, so bathrooms, exteriors, and wet areas need a moisture-resistant board or a fiber cement board instead.
Why use phenolic board for formwork?
The hard resin face resists moisture and releases cleanly from set concrete, so the panel survives many more pours than ordinary plywood and leaves a better finish on the concrete.
What is melamine board?
A panel with a factory-applied decorative surface, so it needs no further finishing. It is used for cabinet carcasses, shelving, and fit-out where a finished face is wanted straight off the sheet.
