About paints and coatings
What is the difference between latex and enamel?
Latex is water-based, dries quickly, and suits masonry and interior walls. Enamel is solvent-based, dries harder, and is normally used on metal and wood where the surface takes wear. They need different thinners and different preparation.
Do I really need a primer?
On bare metal, new masonry, and bare wood, yes. Primer is what bonds to the surface and gives the topcoat something to hold onto. Paint applied straight onto bare material usually fails early, whatever the quality of the topcoat.
Why does new concrete need neutralising?
Fresh concrete and plaster are strongly alkaline, which attacks paint applied over them. A neutraliser or masonry primer deals with that. Painting new masonry too soon is one of the most common reasons a wall finish fails.
How much paint do I need?
It depends on the area, how porous the surface is, and how many coats. Tell us the area and what you are painting and we will help you work it out.
