Steel Bars & Rebar, Cebu
Round and Square Bar
Plain bar has a smooth surface rather than the ribs of deformed bar. Without those ribs it does not key into concrete the same way, so it is used where the bond is not the point: stirrups, ties, dowels, grillework, and general fabrication. Square bar serves the same kind of work where a square section suits the detail better.

Questions
About round and square bar
Can plain round bar replace deformed bar in concrete?
No, not where the design calls for deformed bar. The ribs on deformed bar are what lock it into the concrete and let the two work together. A plain bar can slip under load, so substituting it in a structural element is a serious change and not a site decision.
What is rerolled bar?
Bar rolled from reclaimed steel rather than new billet. It costs less, and it is used for non-structural work where certified properties are not required. It should not be used where the design specifies a graded reinforcing bar.
What is square bar used for?
Grilles, gates, window guards, balustrades, and decorative metalwork, where the square section looks right and welds up neatly. It is also used in general fabrication wherever a solid square section is wanted.
