Metal Framing

Metal framing is light gauge steel section used to build the grid that ceilings and drywall partitions fix to. It replaced timber battens on most commercial work because it stays straight, does not warp with humidity, and is not attacked by termites.

Questions

About metal framing

What is the difference between single and double furring?

Double furring is the deeper section and carries more load over a longer span, so it is used for suspended ceilings. Single furring is lighter and normally fixed closer to the substrate. Which one a ceiling needs depends on the span and the weight of the board.

Why use metal framing instead of wood?

Steel section stays straight, does not warp as humidity changes, and is not attacked by termites. In a Philippine climate those are meaningful advantages, which is why metal framing is standard on commercial ceilings and partitions.

Which thickness should I choose?

Thicker sections are stiffer and span further. The right choice depends on ceiling span, the weight of the board being fixed, and any services carried in the ceiling void. Follow the ceiling system design where one exists.
