Stainless and Coated Rope

Where ordinary galvanized rope will not last, two alternatives are used. Stainless steel resists corrosion throughout the rope rather than relying on a coating. PVC-coated rope wraps a galvanized core in plastic, which protects the steel and gives a smooth surface that will not snag or mark what it runs against.

Questions

About stainless and coated rope

Is stainless wire rope stronger than galvanized?

Not usually. At the same diameter and construction, stainless is typically comparable or slightly weaker than equivalent carbon steel rope. Its advantage is corrosion resistance, not strength, so it is chosen for the environment rather than for load.

Why choose PVC-coated rope?

The coating protects the steel from moisture and gives a smooth surface that will not snag, mark surfaces, or cut into hands. It is common on balustrades, barriers, and gym equipment. Note that the coating hides the steel, so it cannot be inspected visually the way bare rope can.

How is coated rope sized?

By two figures: the diameter of the steel rope inside, and the finished diameter including the coating. The load rating follows the steel core, not the outside measurement, so always quote both when ordering.
