Steel Beams & Sections, Cebu
Wide Flange
Wide flange is the standard structural beam section. The shape puts most of the steel in the top and bottom flanges, which is where bending stress is highest, so it carries far more load for its weight than a solid section would. It is specified by depth and by weight per foot.

Questions
About wide flange
Why is a beam quoted as depth and weight per foot?
Depth gives the section its stiffness, and the weight per foot indicates how much steel is in it. Two beams of the same depth can have very different weights and therefore very different capacities, so both figures are needed to identify a section.
What is the difference between an I-beam and an H-beam?
They are both wide flange sections. In general use, a beam with a deeper web relative to its flange width is often called an I-beam, and one with flanges roughly as wide as it is deep an H-beam. The specification is what matters, not the name.
Which section do I need?
That comes from the structural design, based on the span, the load, and the deflection limit. It is not a substitution to make on site. Send the schedule and we will confirm what is available.
