MS and Checkered Plate
Mild steel plate is flat sheet steel used for base plates, gussets, machine bases, and fabrication generally. Checkered plate, sometimes called chequer or tread plate, has a raised pattern rolled into one face to provide grip underfoot, which is why it is used for walkways, stair treads, and vehicle decks.

What is checkered plate used for?
Anywhere people or vehicles need grip on a steel surface: walkways, stair treads, platforms, ramps, and truck decks. The raised pattern gives traction and also stiffens the sheet slightly compared with plain plate of the same thickness.
How is plate thickness chosen?
By the load it carries and the span between supports. Thicker plate carries more and deflects less. For anything structural the thickness comes from the design rather than from what is in stock, so follow the drawing.
Do you cut plate to size?
Plate is supplied in standard sheet sizes. Tell us what you are making and we will advise which sheet size gives the least offcut for your cutting list.
