Deformed Bar
Deformed bar is reinforcing steel with ribs rolled into its surface. The ribs key into the concrete so the two act together, the concrete carrying compression and the steel carrying tension. It is the standard reinforcement in Philippine construction, specified by diameter and by grade.

About deformed bar
What does the grade mean?
The grade is the yield strength of the steel, the stress at which it starts to deform permanently. Grade 33 is PNS 230, Grade 40 is PNS 275, and Grade 60 is PNS 415, with the number roughly corresponding to yield in megapascals. A higher grade carries more load at the same diameter. The grade is set by the structural design, and substituting one for another is an engineering decision rather than a site decision.
Are all diameters available in every grade?
No, and this catches people out. The larger diameters are only made in the higher grades. Grade 33 runs to 25mm, Grade 40 to 36mm, and Grade 60 covers the full range up to 50mm. If a drawing calls for a large diameter in a low grade, it is worth checking the specification.
What is the difference between deformed and plain bar?
Deformed bar has ribs rolled into its surface so it keys into the concrete and resists being pulled out under load. Plain round bar is smooth and is used where that bond is not the point, such as dowels, ties, and general fabrication.
Why is reinforcing bar sold in fixed lengths?
It is rolled at the mill in standard lengths, from 6.0m to 12.0m. Cutting and bending are normally done on site against the bar schedule, since required lengths vary by element and by lap requirements. Choosing a mill length that divides cleanly into your cutting list reduces offcut waste.
