Questions

About lumber

Why is the actual size smaller than the nominal size?

The nominal size refers to the timber before it is dressed. Planing removes material from each face, so a piece sold as 2 by 4 measures less than that. If a dimension is critical, ask for the actual size.

What lumber is used for formwork?

Timber that can take repeated wetting and the pressure of wet concrete without distorting, usually paired with plywood or phenolic-faced board for the face. Tell us the pour and we will advise.

Do you supply treated lumber?

Ask us what is available. Whether treatment is needed depends on whether the timber stays in place permanently and how exposed it is.
