About blocks and hoists
What is the difference between a chain block and a lever hoist?
A chain block is operated by pulling a hand chain and is normally used to lift vertically from a fixed anchor overhead. A lever hoist is worked with a ratcheting handle, can be used at any angle, and is often used for pulling and tensioning as well as lifting.
How does a pulley block reduce the effort needed?
Each line supporting the load carries part of it, so a block with more sheaves and more falls of rope reduces the force at the hauling end proportionally. The trade-off is that you pull more rope for the same lift, and friction in the sheaves means the gain is never quite the theoretical figure.
Does the capacity marked on the hoist include a safety margin?
The marked capacity is the working load limit, which already allows for a design factor over the breaking strength. It is a limit rather than a target, and it applies to a hoist in good condition, properly anchored, with the load hanging vertically.
