Electrical Conduit
Conduit is the tube that electrical cable runs inside. It protects the cable from impact and abrasion, keeps it accessible for replacement later, and in steel form provides mechanical protection that a bare cable clipped to a wall does not. Which type is used depends on how exposed the run is.

What is the difference between EMT and RSC?
Wall thickness and how they are joined. EMT is thin-wall tubing joined with compression or set-screw fittings. RSC is heavy-wall conduit with threaded ends, so it takes far more physical abuse and is used where a run is exposed, outdoors, or at risk of impact.
Why use steel conduit rather than PVC?
Steel gives mechanical protection PVC cannot, and it does not soften with heat. PVC is lighter, cheaper, and does not corrode, so it suits buried and damp runs. The electrical code and the design decide which is required in a given location.
How is conduit sized?
By trade size in inches, which is a designation rather than an exact measurement. The size needed depends on how many conductors go in and their diameter, since the code limits how much of the conduit cross-section the cable may fill.
