C-Purlins

C-purlins are cold-formed steel sections shaped like the letter C. They run horizontally across the roof frame, spanning between trusses or rafters, and the roofing sheets fix directly to them. The shape gives good stiffness for the weight, which is why it is the standard purlin section.

Questions

About c-purlins

What thickness of C-purlin do I need?

It depends on the span between supports and the load the roof carries, including wind uplift. Longer spans and heavier loads need thicker sections. This is set by the structural design rather than chosen on site.

Should I use black iron or galvanized?

Galvanized resists corrosion better and is worth it where the purlins are exposed, near the coast, or in a building that is hard to maintain later. Black iron is normally painted and is common where the roof space is enclosed and dry.

How far apart do purlins go?

The spacing depends on the roofing profile and gauge as well as the design loads, since the sheet has to span between purlins without deflecting. The roofing manufacturer's span tables and your structural design govern it.
