Load Binders and Chain
A load binder tensions a chain over a load so it cannot shift in transit. The chain goes over the cargo, the binder takes up the slack, and the assembly holds the load against braking and cornering forces. Two mechanisms are common: a lever binder, which is quick, and a ratchet binder, which is slower but safer to release.

What is the difference between a lever binder and a ratchet binder?
A lever binder is tensioned by swinging a handle past centre. It is quick, but it stores a lot of energy and the handle can fly back hard when released, which is a well-known cause of injury. A ratchet binder applies tension gradually through a gear and releases in controlled steps, so it is safer, though slower to use.
How do I choose the binder size?
By the chain it will be used with. A binder is rated for a range of chain sizes, such as 5/16 to 3/8 inch, and using it with chain outside that range means the assembly is not properly matched. The chain, the binder, and the anchor points all need to suit the load.
What is a grab hook for?
It is shaped to grip a single link of the chain, which lets you shorten the chain to length without any free tail. That is how a transport chain is adjusted to fit a particular load.
