About nails
Why do roofing nails have an umbrella head?
The wide domed head spreads the clamping load over the roofing sheet and, with its washer, seals the hole against water. An ordinary flat nail would pull through the thin sheet and leave a leak at every fixing.
What makes a concrete nail different?
It is made from hardened steel so it can be driven into masonry without bending or shattering. An ordinary wire nail simply bends. Concrete nails are also more brittle, so eye protection matters when driving them.
When should I use finishing nails?
On trim, mouldings, and joinery where the fixing should not be visible. The small head can be punched below the surface and filled, leaving a clean finish. They hold less than a common nail, so they are not for structural work.
