Fire Protection

Fire protection fittings are the standpipe equipment built into a building so a fire service can connect to its water supply, and so occupants can reach a hose. The parts are standardised so that fire service equipment couples to them reliably.

Questions

About fire protection

What is a siamese connection for?

It is the inlet or outlet where a fire service connects its equipment to the building standpipe. The two-way arrangement allows more than one line to be connected, and roof outlets let crews take water from the standpipe at height rather than running hose all the way up.

Why is a mounting nipple needed for a hose rack?

Pipe thread and hose thread are different standards and do not couple directly. The nipple adapts one to the other and provides the mechanical support the rack hangs from.

Does fire protection equipment have to meet a specific standard?

Yes. Fire protection installations are governed by the fire code and by the standards it references, which cover the equipment, its installation, and its inspection. Specify what your design and the authority having jurisdiction require, rather than selecting on size alone.
