Wire Rope Splicing

A wire rope is only as good as its terminations. We splice rope to the length you need and form the eyes and end fittings, so the assembly arrives ready to use rather than as a coil you have to make up on site.

What it covers

Wire Rope Splicing in detail

Eye splices

Eyes formed in the end of a rope, with or without a thimble, so the rope can be shackled to an anchor point without the eye crushing under load.

Cut to length

Rope cut and finished to the length your equipment needs, rather than supplied in a standard coil.

Slings made to order

Lifting slings made up from rope, with the terminations the job calls for.

End terminations and fittings

Thimbles, clips, and end fittings fitted to the rope so the assembly is complete when it reaches you.

Questions

What people ask

Why have a rope spliced rather than clamping it yourself?

A properly formed splice or termination holds a much greater proportion of the rope strength than a hand-fitted arrangement of clips, and it does not loosen in service. Clips fitted the wrong way round, which is a common error, badly reduce the holding power of an eye.

Do I need a thimble in the eye?

Almost always. Without one the rope bends tightly around whatever it is attached to and the inner wires are crushed and worn every time the load moves. A thimble holds the eye in a smooth curve and takes that wear instead of the rope.

What do you need to know to make up a sling?

The rope diameter and construction, the finished length you need, what terminations go on each end, and what the sling will be used for. Tell us the application as well as the dimensions, since it affects what is appropriate.

Can you splice rope I did not buy from you?

Talk to us about it. We would want to see the rope first, because splicing a rope that is already worn or damaged is not doing you a favour.
